This high-end custom single-story waterfront home was designed by Christian P. Hemrick, RA, NCARB, with MHK Architecture. The built product followed these design documents through permitting. The challenge presented by the client was minimal grade change, minimum number of risers, and separated enough so the final set of stairs was more inconspicuous than monumental. Directly related to that challenge was fitting all of the program on only one floor. The roof cants, flared fascia, thickened corbels, charcoal concrete tiles, and cream-colored sea stone with aquatic fossils exposed, all served to invoke a Contemporary take on a traditional Polynesian Meeting House. The ‘modern red brick home in the woods’ is a rendered New England study of the original home.
